Austin Miller and his father, Phillip, created the Gators nickname for the University of Florida out of necessity, according to the school's athletic website. In an attempt to order banners and pennants for his dad's stationery store in Gainesville, Austin went to the Michie Company, only to find the school had no official logo. Because the alligator was native to Florida and no other school had adopted it, Austin went with it. The nickname proved popular among the student body, and the football team started referring to itself as the Gators shortly thereafter.
