Zero Waste

The San Francisco School wants to expand its commitment to the environment by attempting to become a zero-waste school and diverting as much of its waste as possible from landfill. Outside training will be provided to the teachers along with assemblies and field trips. The school has begun implementing several polices for dealing with waste diversion and reduction. Their actions have included a parent handbook which includes zero waste language and informs parents of the new zero waste goal. The handbook also contains information on packing zero waste lunches.

In addition, the teachers are looking at ways of incorporating waste diversion into their curriculum. For example, the 6th graders will be trained on waste audits which they will do regularly as part of their science and math lessons to monitor success in diverting waste from landfill.

A grant from the Arthur and Elena Court Nature Watch Conservancy will provide San Francisco School with the funds for additional planning and training time that they will need to fully integrate zero-waste principles into their curriculum.
